Situated on the Mugwangho Hill, Meru National Park, Elsa’s Kopje is an architectural marvel on a hill above George Adamson’s old bush camp. It was here that George and Joy Adamson released their lioness Elsa before writing Born Free about its life.
The lodge is built entirely from local materials and blends into the hill so well that it is hard to see from a distance. From the infinity pool outside the main dining area and bar, guest can look out over the Meru plains for hundreds of miles. And uniquely for a national park, guests here are allowed to walk across the plains and through the forests with the lodge’s highly trained safari guides.
Eight cottages built into the rocks of the hill surround the main lodge building. Thatched with reeds from the rivers below, they are extremely eco-friendly, a point underlined by the many environmental awards the lodge has been awarded. Each cottage has its own romantic bathroom with broad views through the trees and out over the park. In this arid area, the design emphasis is on air and space. All the rooms are secluded and private but linked to the lodge and a personal butler by walkie-talkie. There is also a spacious private house, with its own swimming pool, and a large honeymoon suite spread over three levels.
The food is traditional Northern Italian cuisine blended with a selection of local and international dishes, fresh baked bread, crisp salads and locally grown vegetables.
Activities include game drives in open-sided safari Land Rovers, driven by knowledgeable driver-guides. Guided walks are led by a Professional Safari Guide and accompanied by the Ranger. Other attractions include bush breakfasts, sundowners and visits to the Tharaka tribal village on the Southern Boundary of the Park.
