Joy’s Camp is situated in Shaba National Reserve, which is 314kms from Nairobi. Shaba National Reserve is a semi desert with a rugged hilly terrain, with great rocky kopjes (small hills) and lots of springs supporting the abundant wildlife. The landscape is similar to nearby Samburu with riverine forests, acacias and doum palms.
Shaba National Reserve was made famous for its association with the world famous conservationists Joy and George Adamson and the film “ Born Free”.
An elegant oasis in the arid lands of Samburu; Joy’s Camp is built on the site of Joy Adamson’s tented home in Shaba National Reserve. The site was also home to Penny the leopard, the heroine of her last book.
The 10 chic canvas bedrooms are set on raised platforms with breathtaking views of the surrounding hills. The camp overlooks a large natural spring where elephant and lion jostle for watering rights with herds of buffalo and the rare desert species of Beisa Oryx, Reticulated Giraffe and Grevy’s Zebra.
Each tent is 100 sq metres and is uniquely decorated with Boran/Somali cloth design, handmade glass and the vibrant fabrics of the local nomadic tribes creating a chic, sophisticated and stylish camp. Each tent has it’s own private deck, ideal for private game viewing as well as relaxing, reading and soaking up the truly wild environs offered by Shaba. The eastern corner of the Samburu eco-system, Shaba is a secluded idyll; an arid landscape dotted with lush springs and rocky river gorges.
Activities available are daytime game drives, guided bush walks, bush breakfasts along the Ewaso Nyiro River and Gorge, sundowners, cultural visits, trips to Magado Crater and the singing wells, swimming pool, massage, shop, Joy Adamson Museum.
The style and décor of this tented camp in Shaba National Park is influenced by the culture and craft of the nomadic Boran tribe. There are 10 beautiful en-suite tents set up amongst the Acacia trees at the site of a natural spring. Extremely spacious with a canopied bed and a wide veranda, you’ll find your tent to be rather irresistible when it comes to siesta time.
A room with a view takes on new meaning at Joys Camp. Each tent looks out towards the sacred Shaba and Boditch Mountains. You may be in a remote wilderness but the en-suite bathroom in your tented accommodation at Joys Camp is beautifully appointed.
