The lodge lies at the southern end of Masai Mara Game Reserve. It is sited in the direct path of the annual migration and was first lodge to be built in Mara. Keekorok’s charm lies in the liberal use of local building materials. Sand stone, cedar wood and other indigenous materials are used in all rooms and public areas. A 300m walkway meanders through the riverine forest in front of Keekorok with a small bar at one end overlooking a dam where the resident hippo, if he is not on a ‘walk about’ finds his observers as fascinating as they find him.
The Masai Mara National Reserve is habitually teeming with wildlife. It is home to literally millions of plains game and their attendant predators particularly during the months from July to October when the migration of wildebeest and zebra reaches its northern peak. ll kinds of animals and birds abound: 95 species of mammals and reptiles, and an astonishing 485 species of birds have been recorded in the reserve.
